Oz History

I admit that my perspective on what people should know is a bit skewed given my love of general knowledge, but I assume there is some stuff that everyone knnows. Apparently, no. I just asked about 6 or 8 PhD students when was Australia discovered by James Cook. No one knew. Somebody said 1788 (that's the First Fleet).

Everyone else said 1760s to 1770s. The answer is 1770. I'm curious. Do I know this because I like history or is it my QLD education? Or do we know it because of the Town 1770?

Also, a couple people didn't know the first Prime Minister. Good luck on the new citizenship test.

i myself, am, unfortunately, shamefully inadequate when it comes to knowing the history, and even to a large degree, the geography, of my own most glorious nation, OzLand.

see, first prime minister, i think mcarthur philip dude, because of merino sheep or something.... they say alcohol affects the memory...

People are stupid, really.

dalai, you clown, you've got the first governor of nsw mixed up with the first prime minister, and then you got the answer to that (arthur phillip) mixed up with john macarthur....

"It doesn't matter? Who cares?" they say.

Right, but I'm suppose to respect your opinions in other matters...

Arthur Phillip, John King, John Hunter, William Bligh, Lachlan Macquarie... I can't remember the rest. Hmmm.

Having now lived in three states, my geography is OK. I know such Australian cities as Ballarat, Perth, and Auckland.

I had a go at the citizenship test the other day, did ok. I'm fairly happy with my Oz history, although its not perfect.

And I think everyone should know the first PM of Australia due to that annoying ad they had on TV about 2 years ago. I want to punch that smart arse kid in the face.

The thing is, Barton is first PM, but he didn't spend long there - he left to join the High Court when it was started.

The more important early PM was Deakin.
